There are a lot of things we don't think about in our daily life: we could ask somebody "How far is River Street?", and we would be answered with something like this "250 meters", but, how would it be if we were in a foreign country?. For example, English and American people doesn't use meters or kilograms but miles or pounds. How many differences would we find if we were in England?. Well, just that is what Georges Mikes tells us with this book. With an hilarious prose, the author write about his adventures in understanding why English people are the way they are. Did you know that if somebody in London starts talking to you with something like "I'm afraid that..." he is really being rude to you?. Don't take it seriously, we are just being ironic ;).
George Mikes (pronounce it "mi-'quesh") was an Hungarian journalist with a great sense of humour. He used his irony to write about subjects like being old ("How to be seventy"), politics ("How to unite nations"), money ("How to be poor") or religion ("How to be God"). To understand some of his jokes could be necessary to know more about Anglo-saxon people but you can ask your English teacher for help with an explanation. It will be worth it!.
United Kingdom is the official name given to Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales as a whole. Its history as that begins in 1800 with the Union Bill, which joined Ireland to the former "United Kingdom". It has a great and interesting story. You can learn more about it in Wikipedia or by asking your English teacher. Again he/she will love to help you with that for sure!.
This is the first time we use English to post a message in our blog. If you liked it, please feel free to help us by sending your own reviews about books written in English. Or even French!
